Community Programs for Students
Community Building & Resilience After-School Program
Interactive Discovery’s Kindergarten After-School Program was a structured, weekly intervention designed to support young children in developing essential social-emotional and community-building skills. Running from 2015 to 2017 and led by a clinical team, the program focused on helping children move from an individual focus toward collaboration, connection, and a sense of belonging within a group.
Through fun, interactive, and developmentally appropriate activities, including creative arts, music, role-play, group games, and storytelling, children practiced key skills such as kindness, empathy, self-regulation, and expressing their needs in constructive ways. The program incorporated structured routines, visual tools such as the Community Quilt and Community Jar, and engaging helper characters to reinforce learning.
Grounded in research highlighting the importance of community in early childhood development, the curriculum emphasized four core themes: building community, developing self-awareness and emotional regulation, practicing respect and active listening, and strengthening collaborative problem-solving skills.
Essence Middle School – Building Strength Together
This program was a comprehensive, trauma-informed, and attachment-based support initiative designed to address the emotional and psychological needs of students, staff, and families impacted by the sudden closure of a local Middle School. Developed and implemented by Interactive Discovery, the program aimed to help the school community process the transition, strengthen connections, and provide tools for coping with uncertainty and loss.
The program was organized into three phases: assessment, intervention, and a commemorative project titled “From Passive to Active.” Clinicians worked with small groups of students in structured classroom sessions, incorporating creative and experiential modalities such as games, arts and crafts, music, movement, yoga, and gardening. These activities provided students with opportunities to express emotions, reflect on their experiences, and remain connected to their peers during a challenging transition.
The curriculum focused on fostering community building, emotional awareness and regulation, respect for differences, and peer cooperation. Students developed skills in conflict resolution, identifying and expressing feelings, managing frustration, and collaborating with others. The program also emphasized building self-esteem, resilience, and creative problem-solving while supporting the broader school community through a period of significant change.
